Windham PD warns parents of online predator threat
Unidentified men join illegal video-chat with area children

By Emily Parkhurst

Two separate groups of middle-school children in Windham have reported occasions of naked adult males joining their video-chat groups on the web site TinyChat.com and masturbating. The alleged incidents occurred while the children were on their home computers four times since December.

''The kids describe different men,'' said Windham Police Officer Matthew Cyr, who is investigating the incidents.

The men's faces were never show in the videos, which adds to the challenge of investigating this incident, Cyr said.

''They could be anywhere in the world. I won't hold any false hopes that we'll find these guys.''

The Windham Police Department has contacted the web site administrator to request further information about the alleged incidents. Cyr said he had not yet heard back from anyone at the site.

The Windham PTA is sponsoring a presentation by Cyr, Bob Hickey, RSU 14 Director of Technology, Bob Asselin, Technology Integration Specialist, and Peter Mullen, Technology Specialist for parents about protecting their children on the Internet. The presentation will be at Windham High School from 6:30 to 8:30 on Wednesday.

Cyr said monitoring children's Internet usage is vital, and that parents need to get educated about online dangers.

''I ask parents if they would set their kids down in the middle of New York City and let them explore,'' said Cyr. ''So far I've never had a parent say yes.''
