SAD 15 athletic director resigns

By Emily Parkhurst

Co-Curricular Director Melanie Craig turned in a letter of resignation to SAD 15 Superintendent Victoria Burns earlier this week, citing personal reasons as the determining factor in her decision. Craig will fulfill her current contract with the district, continuing to serve in her position until June 30.

''I was very saddened to submit my resignation as SAD 15's Athletic Director,'' said Craig in a statement. ''I look forward to continuing to work together for the best interests of the students of the GNG community.''

Craig was promoted to co-curricular director two years ago after serving as interim director for a half-year. Before that she was the physical education teacher at the middle school.

The position, which was changed from athletic director to co-curricular director around the time Craig was promoted, oversees the athletic programs, drama club and other co-curricular activities throughout the district. Burns said she had not yet officially notified the school board of Craig's resignation, but that, as per standard protocol, she would make the official announcement during the next meeting on March 17.

''I will talk to the personnel committee about the (hiring) process,'' said Burns. ''We'll look at the job description and decide what we want to do. We'll get input from stakeholders and come together to form an interview team.''

Burns said the newly formed Co-Curricular Athletic Council, which Craig helped found, would also play a role in the decision-making process.

''We wish her well and appreciate all she's done for the district,'' Burns said.
