Miller announces candidacy for Senate District 11

By Emily Parkhurst

Chris Miller, 55, of Gray, announced this week that he will be running for the Maine Senate District 11 seat currently filled by Senator Gerald Davis (R -- Falmouth). District 11 covers Cumberland, Gray, Falmouth, North Yarmouth, and Yarmouth.

Miller is a Green Independent candidate and in 2006, he ran unsuccessfully for governor in the Democratic Primary. He is a member of both Peace Action Maine and the Second Maine Militia.

Miller said he is running because the economic downturn we experience reflects, in part, ongoing massive ecological and environmental collapse and that there will be no recovery around the corner and tax revenues of all sorts will continue to plummet. He said he will focus on establishing a fair, sustainable and supportable budget that works as well for the least well off as for those best off. He added that, if elected, he will introduce plans to restructure state government, reversing the trend to consolidation and pushing toward much needed decentralization and self-sufficiency.

Miller is a father, a 1979 graduate of MIT with a degree in architecture and a long-time activist focused on energy issues.

The Independent will run a question and answer session with the candidates prior to the June primaries.
